Designing intelligence for humans.

Atwood is a research-and-development company. We design, build, govern, and run complete intelligent systems — AI, big data, and IoT at scale — for regulated organizations that don't have an AI team. From non-profits to civil infrastructure to the enterprise. Human-centered by design, intelligent by default.

Why Atwood

We don't sell tools. We run the whole system.

The big platforms hand you primitives and expect an AI team to assemble them. We deliver the entire stack — designed, compliant, and operated — so organizations without engineers can put AI to work safely. You bring the mission; we bring the whole stack.

Complete, not a toolkit

We design, build, integrate, and operate the whole system — nothing for you to assemble or maintain. The big platforms sell the engine and the manual; we hand you the running system.

Governed by default

Compliance, audit, and human oversight built in — ISO 42001-aligned and provable end to end. Not a feature you configure; the way it's built.

No AI team required

You bring the mission and the domain knowledge. We bring the engineers, the data scientists, and the infrastructure — and we keep running it.

What we do

Research and development for intelligence at scale.

An R&D company turning emerging technology into systems that work in the real world — six disciplines, end to end.

01

Research

We investigate what's next — AI, data, and connected systems — and turn open questions into working prototypes.

02

Design

We turn complex, large-scale systems and channels into simple mobile and desktop interfaces — human-centered, and obvious to use.

03

Compliance

Built for regulated, audit-heavy environments — governance, traceability, and controls baked in from the start.

04

Implementation

From prototype to production. We engineer, integrate, and deploy the systems we design.

05

Big Data

Pipelines, analytics, and ML on large, messy, real-world data — at production scale.

06

IoT at Scale

Connected devices and sensor networks — instrumented, governed, and operated across thousands of endpoints.

How we design intelligence for humans

Rooted in IBM Enterprise Design Thinking and mapped to ISO 42001 — the AI management system standard. We lead with human-centered design, then move through a Plan-Do-Check-Act lifecycle, so what we build is accountable and auditable by design.

↻ The Loop — Observe → Reflect → Make — runs continuously; phases revisit as we learn.

01

Design

Human-centered design, IBM-style: we frame intent as Hills, embed Sponsor Users from your team, and design for the data — and for when the AI is wrong. Risk is surfaced here, not after.

02

Systems Integration

We connect and unify the systems, data, and devices already in play — with governed data provenance and access from the start.

03

Implementation

We engineer, verify, and deploy the system into your real environment — documented and traceable end to end.

04

Optimization

We monitor it in production and tune — performance, reliability, and fit to the work — with every action logged.

05

Training & Growth

We bring your people up to speed and keep improving the system as needs evolve and the standard expects.

Responsible AI

Design ethics and governance, on the same page.

We pair IBM's Everyday Ethics for AI with the ISO 42001 controls already in our process — so responsible design and provable governance reinforce each other instead of competing. Few can claim both; it's where design soul meets compliance rigor.

Selected work

Complex systems, made simple — for years.

We've spent years turning complex, enterprise-scale systems and multi-channel platforms into simple mobile and desktop interfaces — from Microsoft and P&G to the University of Maryland. Now we apply that craft to governed AI, building with AI in the loop so delivery stays fast without cutting corners. Full archive at atwood.design.

Pick the work. We make it run.

Partners & systems

Built on your stack. Governed across it.

We build on the platforms you trust and connect into the systems you already run — over MCP, REST, A2A, and custom workers. Connectors are custom and always expanding.

How we bring you along

From first draft to a standing colleague — one safe rung at a time.

We don't hand your team a powerful AI and walk away. We bring you up the curve of what AI can safely do — one proven step at a time, with a human in control the whole way.

Rung 01 / Assisted

AI that drafts — you decide

Human does the work

Your team uses AI to draft, summarize, and answer — right inside the tools they already use. Nothing acts on its own. This is where AI literacy and trust get built.

  • Draft grant reports, meeting notes, and first-pass analysis
  • Every output reviewed by a person before it's used
  • Goal: a shared, honest model of what AI can be trusted with
Where teams new to AI should start.
Rung 02 / Supervised

AI does one real task — you approve it

Human approves every action

AI executes a real, scoped task through a governed connection to your systems — a reconciliation, a board packet, a vendor follow-up. Every external action parks for human approval first.

  • One task, end to end, through a governed connector
  • External writes wait in a "Needs you" approval queue
  • Goal: confidence overseeing AI doing real work
Once the team trusts the basics.
Rung 03 / Workflows

Proven runs become repeatable workflows

Human approves by exception

A task that's worked reliably becomes a reusable, scheduled workflow. The team stops approving every step and starts approving only the exceptions.

  • Capture a proven run, then reuse and schedule it
  • Recurring success is auto-proposed as a workflow
  • Goal: delegate the routine, keep oversight where it matters
When the patterns repeat and trust is established.
Rung 04 / Autonomous

Standing agents that work for days

Autonomy with a full audit trail

Long-horizon agents run for days or weeks — learning how your organization operates and surfacing insights and improvements. Every action stays governed, logged, and provable after the fact.

  • Agents that learn your systems, cadences, and norms
  • You manage a fleet, not a single tool
  • Goal: AI as a standing colleague — fully accountable
The destination — reached one safe rung at a time.
The compounding engine

The AI flywheel.

It starts the moment we connect your systems to Nunc. From there it compounds — every run teaches the system more about how you operate, so the next one is sharper. The longer we run it, the more it's worth, and the harder it is to replace.

1Analyze your operational patterns
2Develop company knowledge & memory
3Create AI workflows
4Run & enhance automation

We build our own, too

Meet Nunc — our private AI platform

We don't just consult on AI; we run it. Nunc is our governed, private AI infrastructure — the gateway, approval gates, and audit trail behind the AI we ship. When a build needs to be private and accountable by default, it runs on Nunc.
